I was born in Santander, Spain, in 1968, and received the degree in physics and computer science and the Ph.D. degree in physics from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain, in 1991 and 1998, respectively. Since 1994 I have been with the Centre for Automation and Robotics (CAR) that belongs to CSIC (Spanish Council for Scientific Research), Madrid, Spain, where I hold a research position. My research expertise is in the areas of local positioning solutions for indoor (GNSS-denied) localization/navigation and human vitality-aware health monitoring, using signal processing, Bayesian estimation and inertial-ultrasonic-UWB-RFID sensor fusion. I have published more than 100 articles in journals and conference proceedings, several patents, and contributed as reviewer of many international journals and projects in the field.

I have contributed to the scientific advance with innovative solutions on several areas of research, mainly in automatic fruit detection with depth laser scanners, ship navigation using laser radars, machining automation with micrometer tool location solutions, personal guidance tools for the blind, tools for archeological finding registration, indoor localization for people with diverse needs using portable wearables, inertial estimation solutions for multi-sensor fusion, and recently in the gait analysis of elderly in health applications, among other contributions. These contributions were communicated in journals, conferences, and patents, and their accomplishment was supported by diverse (public & private) sources of funding. The scientific capabilities acquired along more than 25 years of contributions are recognized by the scientific community as a relevant actor in several international collaborations, such as the organization of competitions, dissemination events, project review panels, contract jury member, etc.

I have contributed to society at large by developing new technology and innovation actions with impact on the industry and society, as can be seen in the different industrial private projects (e.g. Fatronik, N. Correa, Aido, ID-Logistics, Crivisa, …) and social-oriented projects (e.g. ONCE, F. Atapuerca, Microcebus, etc.). We divulgate achievement in seminars, tutorial, workshops, video youtube channel, or open-doors activities. We have contributed directly on industry by transferring technology from CSIC to start-ups (Technaid) and larger companies (Sensewhere, Vodafone, Stanley Black& Decker, Indra).

Educative contributions: I am the leader and co-founder of the LOPSI research group, that belong to the Perception Unit at CAR center. I teach seminars for the doctoral program at UAH university. In my everyday activities I have supervised many doctoral students towards their PhD degree, and graduate students to reach end-of-degree and master titles. The educations and skill acquired during our work together has decisively contributed to find better positions with high qualification in innovation companies as the ones mentioned above, where most of our past team members develop their careers, and the creation of start-ups with members educated under my guidance (Javier Roa, Jose Carlo Prieto in Technaid). I contribute to evaluate research activities in juries for personal selection (CSIC) and in project evaluation for funding (National, E.U. and non-E.U.).
